Your Candle Deserves a Little Care
A quality candle is more than a home accessory - it's a ritual. And like any ritual worth keeping, it rewards a little intention. Whether you're lighting a candle for the first time or you've been a longtime fragrance lover, these care tips will help you get every possible hour out of your Chosen Earth Collection candle.
The First Burn Is Everything
This is the single most important step in candle care, and it's one many people skip. On your very first burn, allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the jar before extinguishing the flame. This is called achieving a full melt pool, and it prevents "tunneling" - the frustrating phenomenon where your candle burns straight down the center, leaving wasted wax on the sides.
How long does this take? Depending on the diameter of your candle, plan for 1–3 hours on the first burn. Never rush it.
Always Trim Your Wick
Before every single burn, trim your wick to ¼ inch. A longer wick produces a larger, unsteady flame that burns hotter and faster — consuming your candle too quickly and potentially causing soot or smoke. A properly trimmed wick gives you a clean, even burn and a longer-lasting candle.
What to use: A wick trimmer is the easiest tool, but small scissors work well too. Always trim before the wax is lit - never trim a burning candle.
Watch Your Burn Time
For best results, burn your candle for no longer than 4 hours at a time. Extended burns cause the wick to "mushroom" at the tip, which can lead to uneven burning, excess soot, and a diminished scent throw. After 4 hours, extinguish the flame, let the wax cool completely, then trim the wick before relighting.
Extinguish Thoughtfully
Blowing out a candle can send hot wax splashing and leave a trail of smoke through your space. Instead, use a candle snuffer or gently dip the wick into the melted wax pool using a wick dipper, then straighten it again. This method is cleaner, smokeless, and helps preserve the wick's integrity for the next burn.
Store Your Candles Properly
Fragrance is sensitive to heat and light. Store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve both the wax and the scent. If you're storing a candle between uses, keep the lid on to protect it from dust and help retain fragrance.
Know When to Say Goodbye
Stop burning your candle when ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom. Burning past this point can overheat the jar and damage the surface it's resting on. The good news? The jar itself can be cleaned out and repurposed — a beautiful little ritual in its own right.
