How to Make Your Candle Last Longer

How to Make Your Candle Last Longer

There's nothing quite like lighting a beautifully scented candle and letting it fill your space with warmth. But if you've ever watched a candle burn down faster than expected, you're not alone. The good news? A few simple habits can make a big difference in how long your candle lasts and how beautifully it burns every single time.

Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn

This is the single most important thing you can do. Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about ¼ inch. A long or mushroomed wick causes a larger, hotter flame that burns through wax much faster — and creates more soot. A quick trim with scissors or a wick trimmer keeps the flame steady and your burn time longer.

Let It Burn Long Enough the First Time

The first burn sets the memory of your candle. Wax has a "burn memory". It will only ever melt as wide as it did the first time. Always allow your candle to burn until the entire top layer of wax has melted to the edges of the jar on the first use. This prevents tunneling (that hollow hole down the center) and ensures an even, full burn every time after.

Keep Your Burns to 4 Hours Max

Burning a candle for too long causes the wick to "mushroom" and the wax to overheat, which speeds up burn time and can affect the scent throw. Aim for burn sessions of 2–4 hours for the best experience and longest life.

Store Your Candles Properly

Heat, sunlight, and dust are a candle's enemies. Store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent the wax from softening, fading, or losing its fragrance before you've even lit it.

Keep the Lid On

Between burns, always replace the lid. This protects the wax from dust and helps preserve the fragrance so every burn smells just as beautiful as the first.

Burn in a Draft-Free Space

Wind and air movement cause uneven burning and a flickering flame that eats through wax quickly. Find a still spot to let your candle burn evenly and slowly.

At Chosen Earth Collection, our candles are hand-poured with care using a coconut-apricot and beeswax blend designed to burn cleanly and beautifully. Follow these simple tips and you'll get every last hour out of every candle.
